Fiscal Sponsorship

Netroots Foundation provides fiscal sponsorship services to organizations that align with our mission and goals. Read below for more information about the program and how to contact us to see if your organization is a good fit.

About the Program

What is fiscal sponsorship?

Fiscal Sponsorships are legal arrangements that allow organizations which have yet to receive their 501(c)(3) tax determination from the IRS to indirectly receive donations from foundations and others who wish to donate to 501(c)(3) organizations only.

How would this partnership work?

Your organization enters into a legal agreement with Netroots Foundation. We can then accept donations on your behalf from foundations, corporations and individuals after an administrative fee is deducted. Those funds can then be re-granted or spent on your organization’s programs. We require periodic reporting of your donations and expenditures so we can report activities to the IRS properly.

What services does Netroots Foundation provide?

Netroots Foundation projects receive charitable status as well as financial administration, human resources management, governance and compliance. Projects also benefit from opportunities stemming from the Netroots Foundation family of programs.

What does the service cost?

Netroots Foundation charges a percentage based service fee on all donations received. A slightly higher fee applies to grants due to the additional work required to apply for and service them. Payroll and benefits services are available at additional cost.

How do I apply?

To be considered for a fiscal sponsorship, your organization must align with the goals of Netroots Foundation. We will consider your organization or project for a fiscal sponsorship if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Does it bring new people into the progressive movement? Your project or organization must include a mechanism for recruiting people to do progressive activism or to join social good organizations.
  • Does it expand the reach of the online voice of an existing progressive organization or association? Your project or organization must enhance the infrastructure of an existing organization, constituency or association or provide other assistance to increase activity and online visibility.
  • Does it train progressive individuals or associations in online skills? Your project must teach or advise activists on best practices for using new media effectively to promote their work, strengthen outreach and plan activism.
